RouterPlus vs OpenRouter

OpenRouter routes on list price. RouterPlus routes on your evals, reserves your capacity, and negotiates your price.

OpenRouter
// routed on price
const client = new OpenAI({
  baseURL: "https://openrouter.ai/api/v1",
  apiKey: process.env.OPENROUTER_API_KEY,
});
RouterPlus
// routed on your evals
const client = new OpenAI({
  baseURL: "https://api.routerplus.com/v1",
  apiKey: process.env.ROUTERPLUS_API_KEY,
});

OpenRouter's default is price-weighted load balancing that also checks recent uptime. It doesn't know what "good" means for your app.3

Three things you hit at scale

  • Capacity that's yours

    On OpenRouter's pay-as-you-go plans you share provider capacity with everyone else, and provider limits apply. RouterPlus sources reserved throughput across providers on one contract.4

    Terms from 1 week to 12 months5

  • Wholesale pricing

    OpenRouter passes through list price on every plan; Enterprise discounts its fee, not tokens. RouterPlus buys across providers, so high-spend teams pay less per token.6

    One quote, shopped across providers

  • Providers, sourced for you

    We find providers, load-test them on your traffic, negotiate the price and keep a backup lined up.

    Teams tried 3–4 providers before us and kept our first match

Questions teams ask

Is it a drop-in replacement?

For chat, yes: RouterPlus speaks the OpenAI and Anthropic formats, so you change the base URL, the key and the model IDs. Embeddings, audio, moderation, files and batch aren't supported yet.

What happens to our existing provider contracts?

They keep working. Connect your OpenAI, Anthropic or Azure key or a Bedrock role, and the provider keeps billing you directly while RouterPlus charges no fee.2

Where does our data go?

Billing, telemetry and process logs keep metadata only: tokens, timings, outcomes and cost. Requests and responses on shared endpoints sit in an encrypted debug log for up to 30 days; dedicated endpoints and organizations that opt out are excluded.7

What does the Stripe acquisition change?

Stripe announced on August 19, 2026 that it agreed to acquire OpenRouter. OpenRouter says its product, mission and current commitments stay the same.89
