ChatGPT Pro and Business now include up to $500 in API credits
Pro gets $100 to $500 a month, Business $20 or $100 per seat. Unused credits expire each cycle.
On October 28, 2026, OpenAI began giving eligible ChatGPT Pro and ChatGPT Business subscribers free OpenAI API credits every month, up to $500, as a subscription benefit. The credits go to one API organization that the subscriber links and owns.
What changed
- Pro plans get $100, $200 or $500 per monthly billing period, matching the $100, $200 and $500 Pro tiers.
- Business workspaces get $20 per paid Standard seat and $100 per paid Premium seat, pooled and capped at $500 a month. Annual Business plans get the full year upfront, capped at $6,000.
- The paid subscription must be active for at least 7 days. Plus, free trials, Enterprise and Edu do not qualify.
- The first grant is prorated. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle and do not roll over. Grants renew automatically while the benefit lasts, and OpenAI says it may change or remove it.
- Credits cover paid API usage in the linked organization, including Responses, Chat Completions, Agents, Decisions, GPT-Live and Realtime, Images and built-in tools. They do not cover Codex usage through API keys, and they do not raise rate limits.

| Subscription | Monthly API credits |
|---|---|
| Pro ($100 tier) | $100 |
| Pro ($200 tier) | $200 |
| Pro ($500 tier) | $500 |
| Business Standard seat | $20 per seat |
| Business Premium seat | $100 per seat |
| Business workspace cap | $500 |
What it means
If your team already pays for Pro or Business, part of your OpenAI API bill can now come out of that subscription. Free credits are spent before purchased credits. When both run out, OpenAI API requests fail with HTTP 429 and error code credit_balance_exhausted, so a team that relies only on the grant can hit a hard stop mid-month.

What to do
- Claim as the owner of both the ChatGPT subscription and the API organization, using the same email address. Start in ChatGPT under Settings, then Billing (Pro), or in workspace billing (Business). You can also start in API Platform billing.
- Pick the receiving API organization with care. One subscription links to one organization, and changing it needs OpenAI support.
- Add purchased credits or turn on Auto Recharge if production traffic must not stop when the grant runs out.
- Check the grant under Credit grants in the API billing overview after you claim.
